More than 170,000 airline passengers are stranded after ash was detected in airspace near Jakarta following the eruptions.
According to Indonesia's meteorological agency BMKG, ash reached as far as 20,000ft (6,000m) on Java on east of the volcano, and 50,000ft (15,000m) west of the volcano on the Sumatra side.
